Want To Have A Better Relationship With Your Clients? Send An E-newsletter.
So you want to build a solid relationship with your current clients. You want to keep reaching out to prospective clients. You’d like to keep in touch with past clients. What’s the most effective way to do that?
An e-newsletter.
These are not just emails although they are sent via email. They’re regularly scheduled, informative, and even fun ways to give value to your readers. You get to share a part of your personality in this format so readers feel better connected to you.
The Gift of Relationships
“Do you know about this topic?” My spiritual direction client asked.
“I don’t,” I confessed. I really didn’t know about it. At all. I even had to Google what she’d asked about because I didn’t know the language. Yeesh.
As I thought about it more, I thought of a friend of mine from graduate school who might know. We hadn’t talked since we finished our studies, but were connected on LinkedIn. Just that minimal relationship based on occasional posts, kept her in my mind.
So, I reached out to Barb.
“Do you know about this issue?” I asked her.
“Actually I do. I’ve done work with others with this same concern.”
“What can you tell me about it?”
Barb gave me an overview.
I wanted my client to have access to Barb’s expertise. “May I connect her with you?”
“Absolutely.”
My client worked with Barb and flourished in the relationship. And I got to reconnect with my old friend.
Something as easy as an occasional LinkedIn post or meme kept Barb in my mind.
An excellent newsletter, filled with value and personality, can accomplish even more.
e-Newsletters keep you connected to others
I’ve had the privilege of writing many newsletters over the past years, experimenting with different styles. Certainly the ones which got the most responses
- had information the readers cared about and
- were communicated in my casual voice.
Those newsletters reinforced our relationship.
What’s the biggest benefit of having a regular newsletter?
Why bother? Because you can establish, nurture, and deepen your relationship with your clients. “Clients” include past, current, and future people. Your readers feel a connection to you.
You write to them about the issues they care about. You share insights that make their lives better. You reveal some of your personality in the process. This reminds them they are reading something from a real person who they can engage with.
3 additional reasons to have an e-newsletter include . . .
Reason 1: E-newsletters are probably the most cost-effective means for keeping your business in front of people.
As long as you keep your reader utmost in your mind as you write to them, they will feel engaged. This isn’t a place for “Look how great I am.” They don’t really care. Answer their question, “What’s in it for me?” and they just might give you a few minutes of their day.
Reason 2: E-newsletters can also open up new business opportunities.
As in . . . “I’ve been reading your newsletter for quite some time and am wondering if you would speak at our gathering.”
Or . . . “Do you ever teach about . . . ?”
And . . . “Your last newsletter was exactly what I needed! Can we set up a time to talk?”
Reason 3: E-newsletters are easy for your readers to forward to other people.
It’s a great way to expand your reach. Always include an invitation for readers to sign-up for your newsletter. Give them an easy sign-up form to give you their email address. You might ask for their first name, too.
Have a “Welcome” email sent automatically right after they sign up. (You’ve invited them into a relationship. Nurture it.)
The bottom line
E-newsletters, written well with your readers in mind, are a powerful, cost-effective way to build and strengthen your personal development or coaching business. Give it a try. It’ll help you reach even more people and make a bigger impact in the world.
